Decorative Grains for the Border

Decorative grains are fast growing annuals that can enliven any border. Grains are a great addition planted mid summer that will carry the border through the rest of the season and add interest long into the fall. Ornamental grains also attract wildlife into the garden. Birds will especially enjoy the mature grains in the fall.

Polly Hutchison from Robin Hollow Farm has been growing ornamental grains in the garden for years. She recommends regular watering to get the grains established but after that, they should do fine with a minimal amount of rainfall.

Grains that Polly recommends for the garden are:

Amaranth ‘Green Cascade'
Amaranth ‘Coral Fountain'
Amaranth ‘Opopeo'
Millet ‘Purple Majesty'
Millet ‘Purple Mist"
Millet ‘Lime Spray'
Panicum ‘Frosted Explosion'
Sorghum ‘Texas Black'
Sorghum ‘Bicolor'
Wheat ‘Black Tip' or ‘Silver Tip'
